Darlene Love
Darlene Love, born Darlene Wright in Los Angeles in 1938, has had a storied career in the music industry, starting as the lead vocalist of the renowned trio, The Blossoms. The group gained prominence in the early 1960s as regular performers on the ABC variety show Shindig!, showcasing their incredible vocal talents. They provided backing vocals for a range of legendary artists, most notably Elvis Presley, including his iconic 1968 NBC special, Elvis: The Comeback Special.
One of The Blossoms' most remarkable achievements came when they recorded the number one hit "He's a Rebel," which was credited to The Crystals. Due to logistical challenges, producer Phil Spector had to enlist The Blossoms to record the track, making them the voices behind what would become The Crystals’ only chart-topping single. This unusual situation predated the concept of uncredited vocal contributions, exemplifying the complexities of the music industry at the time.
Additionally, Darlene Love lent her voice to the hit "Zip-a-Dee Doo Dah" by Bob B. Soxx and the Blue Jeans, which reached the top twenty. Throughout her career, Love has not only made significant contributions to pop music but has also been celebrated for her talent and versatility, solidifying her legacy as a key figure in the evolution of the rock and roll genre.
