1 title Acting May 30, 1906 Died: Jun 07, 1978 Cove, Arkansas, USA

Norris Goff (May 30, 1906 – June 7, 1978) was a prominent American comedian celebrated for his role as Abner Peabody in the beloved radio and film series, Lum and Abner. Born in Cove, Arkansas, Goff later moved to Mena, where he formed a lifelong partnership with Chester Lauck (Lum) after graduating from Mena High School in 1924. Both men furthered their education at the University of Arkansas, with Goff being an active member of the Sigma Chi fraternity.

Initially gaining experience as blackface entertainers, Goff and Lauck crafted a hillbilly-themed skit inspired by their own lives, which led to their own network radio series in 1931. Goff’s portrayal of the endearing, simple-minded Abner, who assisted Lum at the fictitious Jot 'Em Down Store in Pine Ridge, became iconic. Alongside acting, Goff co-wrote early episodes and took on various roles, including postmaster Dick Huddleston and con-man Squire Skimp.

The duo made guest appearances in shows like Bing Crosby's Kraft Music Hall, and Goff showcased his talents in solo roles, such as a father figure on The Jack Benny Program. He reprised his Abner character in seven films between 1940 and 1956, while also appearing in episodes of Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. and The Andy Griffith Show during the 1960s.

After retiring to Palm Springs, California, Goff passed away at the age of 72 from a stroke in Palm Desert. His legacy in comedy endures through his memorable characters and contributions to American entertainment.
