Joan Ganz Cooney

Joan Ganz Cooney, born on November 30, 1929, is a distinguished American television writer and producer renowned for her pivotal role in the realm of children's programming. As a co-founder of Sesame Workshop—previously known as Children's Television Workshop (CTW)—Cooney played an instrumental role in the development of the iconic television series Sesame Street. This groundbreaking show has become a staple in children's entertainment since its debut in 1969.

Raised in Phoenix, Cooney pursued her education at the University of Arizona, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in education in 1951. Following her graduation, she gained experience working for the State Department in Washington, D.C., and later as a journalist in her hometown of Phoenix. Cooney eventually transitioned to the television industry in New York City, where she served as a publicist for various production companies.

Her passion for educational television led her to become a documentary producer at WNET (Channel 13), New York's first educational TV station, in 1961. Under her guidance, many of the documentaries she produced received local Emmy Awards, underscoring her talent and dedication. Throughout her illustrious career, Cooney has been a trailblazer in children's media, leaving a lasting legacy that continues to shape the educational landscape for young audiences.
