David Quilter

2 titles Acting Jun 11, 1942 Northwood, London, England, UK

David Quilter is a distinguished English actor whose career spans several decades, with significant contributions to British television and theatre since the mid-1960s.

Born in Northwood, London, Quilter was educated at Bryanston School in Dorset. His aspiration to become an actor was sparked when a schoolmate earned a scholarship to the prestigious Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA). Despite not participating in school plays, this experience inspired Quilter to pursue a career in acting. He honed his craft at the Webber Douglas Academy of Dramatic Art in South Kensington, before making his professional debut in weekly rep theatre in Chesterfield in 1963. His early work included small roles in the Royal Shakespeare Company’s complete history cycle in 1964.

A notable aspect of Quilter's legacy is his connection to the Titanic; his grandfather, Lawrence Beesley, survived the disaster and penned an account titled *The Loss of the SS Titanic*. In tribute, Quilter created three short films based on Beesley’s experiences and delivered a reading of the account in 2012 at the Aldeburgh Lighthouse Station, marking the centenary of the tragedy.

Quilter's television credits are extensive and include roles in *Softly, Softly: Taskforce* (1967), *Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em* (1973), and *Doctor Who* (2008). His film appearances feature notable works such as *The Battle of Britain* (1969), *Goldeneye* (1989), and *Jinnah* (1998). His long-standing career showcases his versatility and dedication to the performing arts.
