During World War II, Charles served as a radioman in the U.S. Navy from 1943 to 1945 and later re-enlisted during the Korean War. After his honorable discharge, he returned to his roots in Portland, where he continued to work in radio at various local stations. However, his true love remained acting, leading him to participate in locally made Hollywood films and commercials.
