Dante Ferretti
Dante Ferretti, born on February 26, 1943, in Italy, is a distinguished production designer, art director, and costume designer whose illustrious career spans decades in the film industry. Ferretti has collaborated with numerous acclaimed directors, both in Italy and the United States, including luminaries such as Pier Paolo Pasolini, Federico Fellini, and Martin Scorsese. His partnership with Scorsese is particularly notable, having contributed to the artistic vision of seven of the director's last eight films. Ferretti’s early career saw him working under Fellini on five projects, and he also shared a significant creative bond with Pasolini across five films.
In addition to his cinematic achievements, Ferretti showcased his talent in the world of opera by designing the set for Howard Shore's opera, The Fly, directed by David Cronenberg, which premiered at the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris in 2008. His exceptional work has earned him three Academy Awards for Best Art Direction for the films The Aviator, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, and Hugo, alongside three BAFTA Awards and a nomination for Best Costume Design for Kundun.
Beyond film, Ferretti designed the interior of Salumeria Rosi Parmacotto, a restaurant in Manhattan, in 2012. He also created a series of statues for the 2015 Milan Expo, reflecting the theme "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life." Ferretti is a proud member of the Italy-USA Foundation, continuing to influence the arts on both sides of the Atlantic.
