Garrett Wang
Garrett Richard Wang, born on December 15, 1968, is a prominent American actor celebrated for his portrayal of Ensign Harry Kim in the acclaimed television series Star Trek: Voyager, which aired from 1995 to 2001.
Wang's journey began in Riverside, California, where he was born to Chinese immigrant parents. His family relocated several times, living in Indiana, Bermuda, and Memphis, Tennessee, before returning to California. Wang completed his high school education at Harding Academy in Memphis and later pursued his studies at UCLA. Initially majoring in pre-med, he shifted his focus through various disciplines including Biology, Political Science, History, and Economics, ultimately earning a degree in Asian Studies while immersing himself in theater.
In addition to his iconic role in Voyager, Wang participated in the fan film Star Trek: Of Gods and Men in 2007, embracing the chance to explore a more villainous character. His versatility extended to guest appearances, including a notable role in the television series All American Girl.
Wang's contributions to the Star Trek community continued when he was appointed as the Director of the Trek Track for Dragon Con in 2010. His popularity led to appearances at events like the Calgary Expo 2012 Comicon, where he engaged with fans and interviewed legendary comic book creator Stan Lee.
An avid science fiction enthusiast since childhood, Wang's early exposure to the genre, although initially limited regarding Star Trek: The Next Generation, ultimately shaped his successful career in the franchise.
