Meredith Monk

Meredith Jane Monk, born on November 20, 1942, is a distinguished American artist celebrated for her diverse contributions as a composer, performer, director, vocalist, filmmaker, and choreographer. Since the 1960s, Monk has been at the forefront of interdisciplinary art, crafting innovative works that seamlessly blend music, theater, and dance. Her extensive discography includes numerous recordings with ECM Records, showcasing her unique sound and artistic vision.

A notable highlight of Monk's career came in 1991 when she composed the opera *Atlas*, which received commissioning from both the Houston Opera and the American Music Theater Festival. Her music has reached wider audiences through its inclusion in notable films, such as *The Big Lebowski* by the Coen Brothers in 1998 and works by acclaimed director Jean-Luc Godard, including *Nouvelle Vague* (1990) and *Notre musique* (2004). Additionally, her composition "Dolmen Music" was sampled by trip-hop artist DJ Shadow in his track "Midnight in a Perfect World," further illustrating her influence across genres.
