Zhang embarked on his creative journey in television and music videos before making his directorial debut with the film "Spring Subway" in 2002. This film, which highlights the experiences of a character navigating Beijing's subway system, set the stage for his exploration of contemporary urban life in China.
Following his debut, Zhang released "Curiosity Killed the Cat," a mystery-thriller that delves into the dynamics of Chongqing, his hometown and a rapidly developing boomtown. His subsequent works, including "The Longest Night in Shanghai" (2007) and "Lost, Indulgence" (2008), further solidified his reputation.
