Melaw Nakehk'o
Melaw Nakehk'o made her impactful acting debut in the critically acclaimed film *The Revenant*, which marked a significant milestone in her multifaceted career as an artist and community advocate. Hailing from Northern Canada and raised in Liidlii Kue, Melaw belongs to the Dehcho Dene and Denesuline nations, with a rich heritage of tribal leadership.
She pursued her education at the esteemed Institute of American Indian Arts in Santa Fe, where she obtained a degree in two-dimensional arts. Melaw has gained recognition for her passionate efforts in preserving and revitalizing traditional Indigenous art forms, particularly through the contemporary application of time-honored techniques. Her commitment to reviving moosehide tanning has not only rejuvenated this cultural practice but also sparked a community-building movement across Canada.
In addition to her artistic contributions, Melaw is a Founding Member of Dene Nahjo, an organization dedicated to Indigenous empowerment and sustainability. She also plays an essential role as an instructor at the Dechinta Centre for Research and Learning, a land-based educational program that emphasizes Indigenous knowledge and practices.
Balancing her professional pursuits, Melaw is a devoted mother to three sons and resides in Yellowknife, Northwest Territories, where she continues to inspire her community through her work and leadership.
