Karen Carpenter

1 title Acting Mar 02, 1950 Died: Feb 04, 1983 New Haven, Connecticut, USA

Karen Anne Carpenter (March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983) was an iconic American vocalist and drummer, renowned for her contributions to the musical duo the Carpenters, which she formed with her brother Richard. Celebrated for her rich contralto voice, Carpenter's drumming talent also earned her respect among peers and critics. Her poignant struggles with eating disorders brought crucial attention to issues like anorexia and body image disorders.

Born in New Haven, Connecticut, Carpenter relocated to Downey, California, with her family in 1963. She developed a passion for music during her high school years, taking up the drums and later joining the Long Beach State choir. The Carpenters signed with A&M Records in 1969, quickly rising to fame throughout the 1970s with a string of successful albums and hits. Although initially the band’s primary drummer, Carpenter gradually transitioned to the forefront as the lead vocalist, with her drumming featured less frequently.

During a brief hiatus in the late 1970s, she recorded a solo album, which was released posthumously. Carpenter battled anorexia nervosa, a condition that was not widely recognized at the time, and was married briefly in the early 1980s. Tragically, she passed away at just 32 due to heart failure linked to her illness. Her untimely death heightened awareness of eating disorders, and her musical legacy endures, including her recognition as one of Rolling Stone's 100 greatest singers of all time.
