Hans-Jochen Wagner, born in December 1968 in Tübingen, is the middle child in a family of educators. His upbringing in Reutlingen was influenced by his mother, an anthroposophical art therapist, and his education at a Waldorf school. Wagner began his academic journey studying to become a teacher with a focus on mathematics and history at the University of Tübingen while simultaneously working as a technician and assistant director at the local theater, Die Tonne. He later shifted his focus to cultural education at the University of Hildesheim before honing his acting skills at the Ernst Busch Academy of Dramatic Arts in Berlin from 1994 to 1997. He further refined his craft with a film acting course at the Film Academy Baden-Württemberg in Ludwigsburg.

Wagner made his on-screen debut in 1998 with the short film "Zita - Stories about Deadly Sins." He gained recognition in 2002 for his role as Martin in the television film "Die Rückkehr" (The Return), directed by Christoph Stark. His first leading role came in 2003 in the German-Austrian film "Sie haben Knut" (They Have Knut). From 2013 to 2021, he portrayed Detective Chief Inspector Hendrik Verhoeven in the ZDF crime series "Kommissarin Heller." Additionally, he has appeared in several episodes of the iconic "Tatort" series since 2004 and has been featured as Detective Friedemann Berg in the Black Forest edition of "Tatort" since 2017, further solidifying his status in the German film industry.
