Akiko Wakabayashi, born on December 13, 1939, in Ōta, Tokyo, is a renowned Japanese actress celebrated for her portrayal of Aki, a Bond girl, in the 1967 film You Only Live Twice. Before her international fame, Wakabayashi starred in numerous films in Japan, particularly in Toho Studio's iconic monster movies, including Dagora, the Space Monster and Ghidorah, the Three-Headed Monster, which are known by various titles globally.

During the pre-production of You Only Live Twice, Wakabayashi was initially cast as Kissy Suzuki, while her fellow actress Mie Hama was set to play Suki, a prominent agent working with Tiger Tanaka. However, after Hama struggled with English, the two actresses swapped roles, resulting in Wakabayashi taking on the more significant role of Suki, which she later suggested be renamed to Aki.

Her transition to international fame coincided with the re-editing of the Japanese film International Secret Police: Key of Keys, which was humorously transformed by Woody Allen into What’s Up, Tiger Lily?, featuring both Wakabayashi and Hama in altered roles. Following her role in You Only Live Twice, Wakabayashi appeared in one more film and made a guest appearance on television before stepping away from the spotlight. In an interview with G-FAN magazine, she revealed that her retirement was due to injuries sustained during filming.
