Grace Lee Whitney (April 1, 1930 - May 1, 2015) was a talented American actress and singer, renowned for her portrayal of Janice Rand in the iconic Star Trek series and its subsequent films. Born Mary Ann Chase, she was adopted by the Whitney family, who renamed her Grace Elaine. At just fourteen, she began her career as a "girl singer" on Detroit's WJR radio, eventually adopting the stage name Lee Whitney, which later evolved into Grace Lee Whitney.

Whitney's early career included performances in Chicago nightclubs, where she opened for legends like Billie Holiday and Buddy Rich, as well as touring with the Spike Jones and Fred Waring Bands. Her Broadway debut came in 1951 with a role in Top Banana, which she later reprised in its film adaptation. Whitney also starred as Lucy Brown in the national tour of The Threepenny Opera.

With a prolific television career, she made over a hundred appearances starting with Cowboy G-Men in 1953, showcasing her talent in shows like Bewitched, Gunsmoke, and Batman. Whitney also featured in the classic film Some Like It Hot alongside icons Jack Lemmon and Marilyn Monroe.

In 1966, she was cast as Yeoman Janice Rand in Star Trek, appearing in eight episodes before her contract was terminated. Whitney later detailed her struggles, including an assault by a series executive, in her memoir, The Longest Trek. After a hiatus, she returned to the franchise, reprising her role in Star Trek: The Motion Picture and its sequels, and celebrating the series' 30th anniversary in the Star Trek: Voyager episode "Flashback." In the 1970s, she also appeared in series like The Bold Ones and Diagnosis: Murder. Whitney's contributions to entertainment and her resilience in the face of adversity left a lasting impact on fans and colleagues alike.
