**Matthew Hawkins: A Dance Prodigy**

Matthew Hawkins, who signed his first full-time professional contract at just 17 years old in 1977, had already dedicated a decade to honing his craft. His early passion for dance was fueled by instinct and an adventurous spirit, while deeper intellectual engagement with the art would develop over time. Alongside dance, he nurtured his vocal talents in a local choir, showcasing his versatility. By age 10, he was enrolled in the Royal Ballet School, where he not only excelled in dance but also learned to read music and began studying for adult ballet exams through evening classes at the Royal Academy of Dancing.

Hawkins’ artistic journey took off when he performed as a pageboy in "Giselle" at Covent Garden, marking the beginning of his formal education in ballet. Observing seasoned performers from the wings, he gained insights into the nuances of dramatic storytelling and the intricate choreography of classic works. He also participated in Benjamin Britten's 1971 opera "Death in Venice," where he played a child in the beach scenes, experiencing the interplay of controversy and artistry firsthand.

His training at the Royal Ballet School emphasized the importance of physical coordination and clarity, contrasting sharply with the intense regimen at the Paris Opera School. Following his graduation, Hawkins became involved in groundbreaking initiatives within the UK dance community, including the International Course for Choreographers and Composers.
