Baz Luhrmann
Mark Anthony "Baz" Luhrmann, born on September 17, 1962, is a distinguished Australian filmmaker and actor known for his expansive contributions to film, television, opera, theater, and music. Celebrated as a modern auteur, Luhrmann's unique vision and hands-on approach in writing, directing, and designing his projects have set him apart in the industry. He ranks as the most commercially successful director from Australia, with four of his films among the top ten highest-grossing Australian movies globally.
Luhrmann gained prominence with his "Red Curtain Trilogy," which includes the beloved romantic comedy Strictly Ballroom (1992), the iconic adaptation of Romeo + Juliet (1996), and the visually stunning musical Moulin Rouge! (2001). His post-trilogy works include the epic Australia (2008), the lavish The Great Gatsby (2013), and the biographical film Elvis (2022), alongside the Netflix series The Get Down (2016). Additionally, he has made his mark in theater, directing productions of Puccini's La bohème for both the Australian Opera and Broadway, as well as creating Strictly Ballroom the Musical (2014).
Luhrmann's musical prowess is evident in his Grammy-nominated soundtracks for Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, and he co-founded the record label House of Iona with RCA Records.
