Amina Annabi was born into a family deeply rooted in music, with a Tunisian father and a French mother. Her musical lineage included a grandmother who was a musician and an uncle who played a pivotal role in founding the Tabarka Festival in Tunisia. This vibrant environment allowed Amina to experience the performances of legendary artists such as Joan Baez, James Brown, and the renowned Algerian singer Warda. It was at the Tabarka Festival where she formed a friendship with the emerging Senegalese artist Wasis Diop, leading to later collaborations.

In 1975, Amina moved to Paris with her mother, who was also a gifted musician and composer. Three years later, she established her own group, showcasing her versatility in various music genres, including soul and traditional Egyptian songs. While her group performed in numerous local venues, Amina began her solo career in 1982, aligning herself with Radio Nova, a prominent station in Paris known for its focus on world music. There, she collaborated with producer Martin Meissonnier, and their partnership blossomed into a personal relationship, culminating in the birth of their daughter in 1986.

Amina's breakthrough came in 1983 when she won a music contest with her rap track "Shehérazade," which incorporated Arab musical influences and was released as a CD single. This marked the beginning of her dynamic performances across Paris, paving the way for her successful career in the music industry.
