Tsilla Chelton

Tsilla Chelton (June 21, 1919 – July 15, 2012) was a distinguished French actress renowned for her compelling performances in both theatre and film. She gained widespread acclaim for her portrayal of the irritable protagonist in the 1990 film *Tatie Danielle*, earning a César Award nomination for her remarkable work. Chelton also captivated audiences as an elderly Dominican in the film *Soeur Sourire*.

Born in Jerusalem to French parents of Jewish descent, Chelton's early life was marked by tragedy, losing her mother at just six years old. She subsequently moved with her father to Antwerp and later to Switzerland during World War II, eventually settling in Paris. She married decorator Jacques Noël and raised four children.

Her passion for acting began with Marcel Marceau's theatre troupe, leading her to a prolific career primarily in stage productions. Chelton performed in all eleven plays by Eugène Ionesco and was honored with a Molière Award for Best Comedian for her role in *The Chairs*. She also introduced Bertolt Brecht's works to French audiences alongside notable actors such as Michel Serrault and Michel Piccoli.

In addition to her acting, Chelton was a dedicated teacher of comedy starting in 1964, mentoring future stars from the Splendid troupe, including Gérard Jugnot, Michel Blanc, and Thierry Lhermitte.
