Werner Nekes

1 title Directing Apr 29, 1944 Died: Jan 22, 2017 Erfurt, Germany

Werner Nekes, born in 1944 in Erfurt, Germany, pursued studies in linguistics and psychology in Freiburg before moving to Bonn in 1964. There, he became the head of the University Film Club and later served as chairman of the FIAG, nurturing friendships with prominent filmmakers, sculptors, and painters, including Dore O., who became both his partner and collaborator in 1967.

Nekes initiated his artistic journey in painting in 1965, experimenting with various materials. His foray into filmmaking began with 8mm and transitioned to 16mm, as he sought to liberate cinema from conventional narrative and psychological constraints, organizing his films around temporal structures and systems.

In 1967, following the rejection of his films at the Kurzfilmtage in Oberhausen, Nekes took the initiative to host a counter-event. Later that year, he relocated to Hamburg with Dore O., marrying her shortly thereafter. He played a pivotal role in co-founding the Hamburg cooperative of filmmakers and was instrumental in organizing the "Hamburger Filmschau."

Nekes's global influence expanded as he conducted seminars on film theory and retrospectives from 1973 onwards. In 1978, he settled in Mülheim an der Ruhr. He co-established the Filmbüro NW in 1980 and the International Center for New Cinema in Riga in 1988. His works garnered recognition at prestigious institutions, including The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Kassel Dokumenta.

As a professor, Nekes taught at various esteemed institutions, including the Academy of Fine Arts in Hamburg and the Academy of Media Arts in Cologne. Additionally, he curated a significant private collection that chronicles 500 years of pre-cinematographic experimentation and the early development of film, focusing on spatial and temporal representation principles.
