François Gérard Georges Nicolas Hollande, born on August 12, 1954, is a prominent French politician who held the office of President of France from 2012 to 2017. His political journey began as an advisor to President François Mitterrand, and he later served in various roles including First Secretary of the Socialist Party (PS) from 1997 to 2008, Mayor of Tulle, and President of the General Council of Corrèze.

Hollande entered the National Assembly in 1988, and his leadership within the PS gained momentum when he was elected as First Secretary. His political stature rose significantly after the Socialist Party's victories in the 2004 regional elections, leading to his assumption of the presidency of the General Council of Corrèze in 2008. In 2011, he declared his candidacy for the presidential election, ultimately securing the nomination and defeating incumbent Nicolas Sarkozy with 51.6% of the vote in 2012.

During his presidency, he achieved notable milestones, including the legalization of same-sex marriage, reforms in labor laws, and the introduction of a law limiting the accumulation of political mandates. He played a crucial role in responding to multiple terrorist attacks in France throughout 2015 and advocated for EU migrant quotas. Hollande's administration oversaw France's hosting of the 2015 United Nations Climate Change Conference and successfully brought the 2024 Summer Olympics to Paris. Despite his achievements, rising unemployment and security challenges led to declining approval ratings, prompting him to announce he would not seek re-election in 2017.
