Initially intent on pursuing dentistry, her plans shifted after she did not succeed in her chemistry GCSE, leading her to explore her passion for acting at sixth-form college.

O'Neill began her career as a television presenter, showcasing her charisma on Saturday Disney from 1993 to 1996 and later becoming a prominent face on the youth-oriented show The Over the Wall Gang, produced by BBC Northern Ireland.
