Manfred Mann

1 title Acting Oct 21, 1940 Johannesburg, South Africa

Manfred Sepse Lubowitz, widely recognized as Manfred Mann, was born on October 21, 1940, in Johannesburg, South Africa. He relocated to the United Kingdom in 1961, where he established himself as a prominent musician and bandleader. Mann, a member of a Lithuanian Jewish family, began his musical journey studying at the University of the Witwatersrand and performing as a jazz pianist in Johannesburg's club scene.

Opposition to apartheid motivated his move to the UK, where he began writing for Jazz News under the name Manfred Manne, later shortened to Manfred Mann. In 1962, he teamed up with drummer Mike Hugg to form the Mann-Hugg Blues Brothers, which evolved into the successful band Manfred Mann. Their music captured the essence of the 1960s Swinging London, producing several chart-topping hits, including "Do Wah Diddy Diddy," "Pretty Flamingo," and "Mighty Quinn." Notably, their 1964 track "5-4-3-2-1" became the theme for the popular ITV show Ready Steady Go!, making them the first group from southern England to achieve a number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 during the British Invasion.

After the band disbanded in 1969, Mann and Hugg launched Manfred Mann Chapter Three, which released two albums but found limited commercial success. In 1971, Mann formed Manfred Mann's Earth Band, achieving significant acclaim with their 1976 rendition of Bruce Springsteen's "Blinded by the Light," which topped charts in Canada and the US. The Earth Band remains active, with Mann continuing to tour alongside founding member Mick Rogers.

Beyond his band work, Mann has contributed to various projects, including a role as a jazz pianist in the 1969 film Venus in Furs, and has collaborated on notable tracks like Uriah Heep's "July Morning."
