David Canary
David Hoyt Canary (August 25, 1938 – November 16, 2015) was a distinguished American actor recognized for his memorable performances on both television and stage. He gained widespread fame for portraying the rugged ranch foreman "Candy" Canaday in the iconic TV series Bonanza, beginning in its ninth season. Additionally, he captivated audiences as Adam Chandler on the long-running soap opera All My Children, a role that earned him an impressive 16 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, with five wins highlighting his exceptional talent.
Before embarking on his acting career, Canary showcased his athletic prowess as a standout football player and was selected as a lineman in the inaugural 1960 AFL draft by the Denver Broncos. However, he chose to follow his passion for performing arts instead. In the early stages of his career, he appeared as Russ Gehring in the renowned primetime soap opera Peyton Place and took on the character of Lamar Dean in the 1967 Western film Hombre.
Canary also made a significant mark in the theater world, delivering a remarkable performance on Broadway in Tennessee Williams's Clothes for a Summer Hotel alongside Geraldine Page. His rich baritone voice allowed him to take on various musical roles in productions such as Kismet, Man of La Mancha, The Fantasticks, Sweeney Todd, and Carousel, while his dramatic talent shone in works like The Seagull, Macbeth, and Clarence Darrow.
