Novak embarked on her acting journey in 1954 after joining Columbia Pictures, where she quickly rose to fame. Among her early successes, the film Picnic (1955) garnered critical acclaim, establishing her as a leading talent in Hollywood. She continued to shine in notable films such as The Man with the Golden Arm (1955) and Pal Joey (1957). However, her most iconic role came in Alfred Hitchcock's suspense masterpiece, Vertigo (1958), where she impressively portrayed both Judy Barton and Madeleine Elster. Following a challenging experience while filming Liebestraum (1991), Novak decided to retire permanently from acting, expressing no interest in making a comeback.
