N!xau
Nǃxau ǂToma, commonly known as Nǃxau (alternative spelling Gcao Tekene Çoma), was born on December 16, 1944, and passed away on July 1, 2003. Hailing from Namibia, he was not only a bush farmer but also gained international recognition as an actor. Nǃxau became widely acclaimed for his portrayal of the Kalahari Bushman named Xixo in the iconic film *The Gods Must Be Crazy* (1980) and its subsequent sequels. His captivating performances earned him the title of "Namibia's most famous actor" by local media.
Tragically, Nǃxau's life came to an end at approximately 58 or 59 years old due to complications from multiple-drug-resistant tuberculosis, which he contracted while on a hunting trip for guinea fowl. He was laid to rest on July 12, 2003, in a semi-traditional ceremony in Tsumkwe, next to the grave of his second wife. He is remembered not only for his contributions to film but also as a loving father to six surviving children. Nǃxau's legacy continues to resonate, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the Bushmen and the impact one individual can have on the global stage through the art of storytelling.
