Elmo Nüganen
Elmo Nüganen, born on February 15, 1962, in Jõhvi, Estonia, stands out as a prominent theatre and film director, as well as an accomplished actor. Since 1992, he has held the position of artistic director at the Tallinn City Theatre, shaping the cultural landscape of Estonian theatre.
Nüganen's academic journey began at the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, where he graduated in 1988. He later returned as a professor, teaching from 1998 to 2002 and again from 2008 to 2012, influencing a new generation of artists. His directorial prowess is particularly evident in his acclaimed war films, "Names in Marble" (2002) and "1944" (2015). "Names in Marble" captivated over 168,000 viewers in Estonia and earned a spot at the 2003 Taormina Film Fest. Meanwhile, "1944" achieved record-breaking opening-week attendance in Estonian cinema history and was selected as Estonia’s entry for the Academy Awards.
Throughout his career, Nüganen has garnered numerous accolades for his theatrical contributions, including the Estonian Annual Theatre Award for Best Director on five occasions (1992, 1995, 2000, 2007, and 2010) and the Estonian National Cultural Award in 1996, 1999, and 2009.
