Al Freeman Jr.

Al Freeman Jr. (March 21, 1934 – August 9, 2012) was a distinguished American actor and director, renowned for his significant contributions to film and television. His filmography includes notable titles such as My Sweet Charlie, Finian's Rainbow, and Malcolm X, while his television credits span popular series like The Cosby Show, Law & Order, Homicide: Life on the Street, and The Edge of Night.

Freeman is perhaps best remembered for his iconic role as Police Captain Ed Hall on the ABC soap opera One Life to Live, where he captivated audiences from 1972 to 1985, and made additional appearances in 1988 and 2000. His groundbreaking performance earned him a Daytime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, making him the first African American to receive this honor. During a brief hiatus from the show, he starred in the controversial sitcom Hot L Baltimore, temporarily replaced by Arthur Pendleton. Freeman also made history as one of the first African Americans to take on a directing role in a soap opera.

Following his time on One Life to Live, he appeared in the film Down in the Delta. His theatrical endeavors included Broadway productions like Look to the Lilies, Blues for Mister Charlie, and Medea. His portrayal of Elijah Muhammad in Malcolm X garnered him the 1995 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Additionally, Freeman shared his expertise as an acting professor at Howard University in Washington, D.C., influencing future generations of actors.
