Colette Janine Marchand (April 29, 1925 – June 5, 2015) was a distinguished French prima ballerina and actress recognized for her remarkable contributions to dance and film. Born in Paris to Alice and Roger Marchand, she began her artistic journey with the Paris Opera Ballet, quickly establishing herself as one of Europe's premier dancers. Marchand, affectionately nicknamed "Les jambes" (The Legs), shared the stage with legendary dancers such as Violetta Elvin, Zizi Jeanmaire, Yvette Chauviré, Janine Charrat, and Margot Fonteyn, captivating audiences across the globe during the 1940s and 1950s.

Her Broadway career flourished with her performances in Roland Petit's Les Ballets de Paris in 1949 and 1950, showcasing a standout piece titled The Boiled Egg, which garnered critical acclaim. In 1951, she featured in the musical Two on the Aisle, which enjoyed a successful run of 276 performances. During this period, she gained considerable media attention, appearing in prominent magazines like Life and on popular television shows including the Ed Sullivan Show.

Marchand's film career was highlighted by her role as Marie Charlet in the acclaimed 1952 film Moulin Rouge, directed by John Huston, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress and a Golden Globe as Most Promising Newcomer. She also worked with renowned director Orson Welles in The Lady in the Ice (1953). Marchand’s rare film appearances included Hungarian Rhapsody and Par Ordre du Tsar, among others. She passed away at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy marked by elegance and talent.
