Chelsi Smith
Chelsi Mariam Pearl Smith (August 23, 1973 – September 8, 2018) was a multifaceted American talent known for her work as an actress, singer, television host, and beauty queen. She gained national acclaim when she was crowned Miss USA in 1995, making history as the third woman of African-American descent to hold the title, following Carole Gist and Kenya Moore. Her remarkable journey continued when she captured the Miss Universe title later that same year, becoming the sixth American woman to achieve this honor and the first since 1980.
Beyond her pageant success, Smith’s career spanned various entertainment fields. She made notable television appearances and pursued a singing career, showcasing her diverse talents. Throughout her life, she became a symbol of empowerment for women, especially within the African-American community.
In 2017, Smith faced a personal battle when she was diagnosed with liver cancer. Despite her declining health, she remained strong and sought solace at her mother's home in Mifflin, Pennsylvania.
