Richard Serra

1 title Directing Nov 02, 1938 Died: Mar 26, 2024 San Francisco, California, USA

Richard Serra (November 2, 1938 – March 26, 2024) was a distinguished American sculptor renowned for his monumental abstract works, often integrated into specific landscapes, urban environments, and architectural spaces. He is celebrated as one of the preeminent sculptors of his generation, known for his exploration of materiality and the dynamic interaction between the viewer, the artwork, and its surroundings, a hallmark of Postminimalism.

Serra began his academic journey studying English literature at the University of California, Berkeley, before transitioning to visual arts. He earned his Bachelor of Arts degree in English Literature from the University of California, Santa Barbara, in 1961, where he was influenced by notable muralists Rico Lebrun and Howard Warshaw. His early work in steel mills profoundly impacted his artistic direction. He continued his studies at Yale University, receiving a Bachelor of Arts in Art History and a Master of Fine Arts in 1964. Serra's time in Paris during a Yale fellowship introduced him to composer Philip Glass and the studio of Constantin Brâncuși, solidifying his shift from painting to sculpture.

After relocating to New York City in 1966, Serra's innovative approach to sculpture took form, marked by his initial experiments with unconventional materials like rubber and neon, eventually leading to his iconic large-scale steel installations. Noteworthy pieces include "To Lift" (1967) and "Thirty-Five Feet of Lead Rolled Up" (1968). His provocative work, such as the controversial "Tilted Arc" in Manhattan (1981), sparked significant dialogue about public art. Serra also ventured into film and video between 1968 and 1979, collaborating with artists like Joan Jonas and Nancy Holt. His pioneering films, including "Hand Catching Lead" (1968) and "Hands Scraping" (1968), showcased his unique approach to materiality in different mediums. Serra's legacy endures through his transformative contributions to contemporary art.
