Herschel Bernardi
Herschel Bernardi (October 30, 1923 – May 9, 1986) was a prominent American actor known for his impactful contributions to film, Broadway, and television. Born in New York City, Bernardi was steeped in the Yiddish theater tradition from an early age, performing alongside his family on the stages of 2nd Avenue.
He achieved significant acclaim for his leading roles on Broadway, particularly as Tevye in "Fiddler on the Roof," as well as notable performances in "Zorba" and "Bajour." In television, Bernardi starred in several series, including "Arnie," where he played a character whose unexpected rise from a flange company loading dock to corporate executive was illustrated in a sitcom format for two seasons. Other television credits include "Harbor Command," "The Eleventh Hour," "State Trooper," and "Peter Gunn," for which he also wrote a script.
Bernardi's film career included roles in classics such as "Irma La Douce," "Love with the Proper Stranger," and "The Front," the latter of which addressed the blacklisting era that he personally experienced in the 1950s. He was also an accomplished voiceover artist, lending his talents to numerous films, commercials, and cartoons, and famously became the original voice of "Charlie the Tuna" for StarKist.
Additionally, Bernardi found success in music, with minor hits like "If I Were A Rich Man" in 1967, echoing his Broadway success, and "Pencil Marks On The Wall" in 1971. Bernardi's multifaceted career left a lasting legacy in the entertainment industry.
