Ronald Ernest Paul, born on August 20, 1935, is a prominent American author, physician, activist, and former politician known for his staunch libertarian views. He represented Texas's 22nd congressional district from 1976 to 1977 and again from 1979 to 1985, later serving Texas's 14th congressional district from 1997 until 2013. Throughout his career, Paul made three bids for the presidency: first as the Libertarian Party nominee in 1988 and subsequently as a Republican candidate in 2008 and 2012.

As a self-identified constitutionalist, Paul has been critical of various federal government policies, particularly targeting the Federal Reserve, tax regulations, and the military-industrial complex. He has also expressed strong opposition to the war on drugs, the war on terror, and extensive surveillance measures such as those outlined in the USA PATRIOT Act and NSA programs. In 1976, he established the Foundation for Rational Economics and Education (FREE) and became the inaugural chairman of Citizens for a Sound Economy in 1985, both organizations advocating for limited government and free-market principles.

Paul has been recognized as the "intellectual godfather" of the Tea Party movement, which emerged in 2007 and gained traction in 2009, rallying around themes of fiscal conservatism and reduced government intervention. His influence continues to resonate in contemporary political discourse.
