Zorz Sarri

1 title Acting Aug 22, 1923 Died: Jun 09, 2012 Athens, Greece

Georges Sari, born Georgia Sarivaxevani on August 22, 1925, in Athens, was a distinguished Greek author and actress. With a French mother and a Greek father from Ayvalik, Turkey, she spent her formative years in Greece, where she began her education. However, World War II disrupted her schooling when Greece entered the war on October 28, 1940.

During the war, Sarivaxevani actively participated in the Resistance, aligning with the United Panhellenic Organization of Youth (EPON). Reflecting on this tumultuous period, she described it as a time of joy amidst struggle, where the desire for liberation overshadowed fear. After graduating under Nazi occupation, she pursued acting lessons at Dimitris Rontiris' drama school.

The aftermath of the war led to her being wounded during the Greek Civil War, prompting her exile to Paris in 1947, where she balanced various jobs with her studies at the Charles Dullin School of Dramatic Art. In 1962, Sari returned to Greece but ceased acting to resist the Military junta, channeling her frustrations into writing her debut novel, *The Treasure of Vaghia*.

Sari's literary career flourished as she authored numerous works, earning the Best Children’s Literature award in 1994 for *Ninet*, a semi-autobiographical piece about her sister. She also received accolades from the Greek Cycle of Books in 1995 and 1999 and was nominated for the Hans Christian Andersen Award in 1988. Additionally, her acting garnered a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Thessaloniki Film Festival.

Georges Sari passed away in Athens on June 9, 2012, at the age of 87, leaving behind a rich legacy in literature and theater.
