Evo Morales
Juan Evo Morales Ayma, born on October 26, 1959, is a prominent Bolivian politician serving as the 80th President of Bolivia since 2006. A self-identified socialist, Morales has made significant strides in advancing socialist policies, including comprehensive land reforms, nationalization of essential industries, and advocating against foreign corporate influence in Bolivian affairs.
Raised in the humble village of Isallawi in the Orinoca Canton, Morales hails from Aymara Native-Latino heritage. His early years were marked by various manual labor jobs, including llama herding, before he turned to coca cultivation and became a key figure in the cocalero movement, representing coca growers' interests.
Evo Morales first ascended to the presidency on December 18, 2005, securing 53.7% of the vote. His popularity surged over the years, as evidenced by a recall referendum on August 14, 2008, where over two-thirds of voters chose to retain him in office. He was re-elected in December 2009 with an impressive 63% majority, leading to a successful second term.
As the head of the Movement for Socialism (Movimiento al Socialismo, MAS), Morales has been instrumental in advocating for the rights of Indigenous Latin Americans and marginalized communities through land redistribution and equitable resource management. He has also championed the cocalero movement, resisting U.S. efforts to eliminate coca cultivation in central Bolivia.
A vocal critic of U.S. foreign policy, Morales has forged alliances with leftist leaders like Hugo Chávez and Fidel Castro. In recognition of his environmental efforts, the United Nations honored him as the "World Hero of Mother Earth" in October 2009.
