Peter Hedges

Peter Hedges, born on July 6, 1962, is a distinguished American author, screenwriter, and film director. Raised in West Des Moines, Iowa, Hedges developed a passion for the performing arts during his time at Valley High School, where he actively participated in theater, including an improv group and a mime troupe known as "The Bakers Dozen." He further honed his craft at the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Hedges gained significant recognition with his novel *What's Eating Gilbert Grape*, which was adapted into a celebrated film, marking a pivotal moment in his cinematic journey. His screenwriting talent earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay for the 2002 film *About a Boy*. That same year, he made his directorial debut with *Pieces of April*, a poignant story starring Katie Holmes, which he dedicated to his mother.

In 2007, Hedges showcased his dual talents again by co-writing and directing *Dan in Real Life*, a romantic comedy that resonated with audiences. Two years later, he was brought on to write and direct *The Odd Life of Timothy Green*, a unique film conceived by Ahmet Zappa and produced alongside Scott Sanders.

Continuing his literary pursuits, Hedges released his latest novel, *The Heights*, on March 4, 2010, through Dutton, further solidifying his place as a versatile storyteller in both literature and film.
