Cathy O'Donnell

Cathy O'Donnell (July 6, 1923 – April 11, 1970) was a prominent American actress, renowned for her roles in film noir classics. She began her career while under contract with Samuel Goldwyn, making her debut in an uncredited role as a nightclub extra in the 1945 film Wonder Man. O'Donnell's breakout performance came in the critically acclaimed 1946 drama The Best Years of Our Lives, where she portrayed Wilma Cameron, the devoted high-school sweetheart of Homer Parrish, a character played by war veteran Harold Russell, who lost both his legs in combat.

One of her standout performances was in the 1949 noir film They Live by Night, directed by Nicholas Ray and co-starring Farley Granger. This film is regarded as a seminal work in the genre and is featured on the Guardian's list of the top ten noir films. O'Donnell and Granger collaborated again in Side Street (1950).

Her later projects included a role in The Miniver Story (1950) as Judy Miniver and a supporting part in Detective Story (1951). In the western The Man from Laramie (1955), she played Barbara Waggoman, the love interest of James Stewart’s character. O'Donnell's final film role was as Tirzah in the 1959 Academy Award-winning Best Picture, Ben-Hur.

In the 1960s, she transitioned to television, taking on smaller roles in shows like Perry Mason and Bonanza, marking her last screen appearance in 1964.
