**Biography of Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa**

Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa hails from the Sherpa ethnic group, one of the 105 communities residing in the foothills of the majestic Nepalese Himalayas, near Lukla, the gateway to Everest. Born in the village of Pangom at an altitude of 2,800 meters, Sonam grew up in a modest stone house lacking modern amenities. Despite his humble beginnings, he pursued education, learning to read, write, and communicate in Nepali, transcending the confines of his native Sherpa language.

At the age of 16, following the untimely death of his father, Sonam embarked on a challenging journey to Kathmandu, where he initially worked for a trekking agency established by his sister. His determination led him to acquire skills in English, cooking, and French, eventually enabling him to establish his own company, Thamserku. Under his leadership, Thamserku evolved into one of Nepal’s most prominent trekking agencies, renowned for organizing expeditions for elite mountaineers while prioritizing the welfare of local communities and the environment.

Sonam’s personal life has been marked by both triumph and tragedy. After suffering the loss of his elder brother to an avalanche and his first wife, Pasang Lhamu Sherpani—who famously became the first Nepali woman to summit Everest in 1993—he found the strength to rebuild his life for the sake of his children. He later married Anita, welcoming a fourth child into their family.

Beyond his entrepreneurial success, Sonam has made significant contributions to his community, founding a charity to support widows of Sherpas, establishing a pension fund for porters, and creating a hospital in Lukla. He is actively working to improve living conditions in his native village, striving to provide electricity and clean water.
