Billy Blanks
Billy Blanks is a distinguished African American athlete, actor, media personality, and the creator of the immensely successful "Tae Bo" fitness regimen, which is rooted in his extensive martial arts expertise. Born in 1955 in Erie, Pennsylvania, Blanks grew up in a modest household as one of 15 siblings and faced challenges such as dyslexia and tendon issues. Nonetheless, he embarked on his martial arts journey at the age of 14, ultimately earning black belts in taekwondo and various other disciplines, as well as winning numerous U.S. martial arts competitions.
Blanks made his film debut in the mid-1980s, taking on tough-guy roles that showcased his athleticism and rugged appearance. His notable film credits include "Tango & Cash" (1989), "Driving Force" (1989), and "A.W.O.L.: Absent Without Leave" (1990). His career took a positive turn in 1991 when he portrayed the drug-addicted running back "Billy Cole" in the action-packed "The Last Boy Scout." This led to further opportunities in low-budget, high-octane films like "Talons of the Eagle" (1992), "TC 2000" (1993), and "Expect No Mercy" (1995).
In the late 1990s, Blanks' groundbreaking "Tae Bo" workout gained worldwide popularity, establishing him as one of the leading fitness trainers globally. He continues to develop and promote his unique fitness program, running the Billy Blanks World Training Center in Sherman Oaks, California. A 7th Degree Black Belt, Blanks boasts one of the most impressive records in karate history, having secured seven world championships, numerous accolades, and over 300 career victories, while being inducted into the Karate Hall of Fame in 1982.
