Kelly Slater
Robert Kelly Slater, born on February 11, 1972, in Cocoa Beach, Florida, is an iconic American professional surfer celebrated for his extraordinary skills and competitive spirit. He holds the remarkable distinction of being a 10-time ASP World Champion, achieving five consecutive titles from 1994 to 1998. Slater made history by becoming the youngest champion at the age of 20 and later the oldest at 38, surpassing Australian surfing legend Mark Richards with his fifth title in 1997, thereby solidifying his status as the most successful surfer in competitive history.
In 2007, Slater further extended his legacy by becoming the all-time leader in career event wins, capturing victory at the Boost Mobile Pro event in Lower Trestles, California. This record was previously held by his surfing idol, three-time world champion Tom Curren. In addition to excelling on the ASP tour, Slater has also showcased his talent in the X-Games during the years 2003 and 2004.
A milestone in his career came on October 3, 2008, when he clinched his ninth ASP world title at the Billabong Pro Mundaka, defeating local competitor Eneko Acero in the third round. Notably, in May 2005 at the Billabong Tahiti Pro contest, Slater became the first surfer to earn two perfect 10s, achieving a total score of 20 under the ASP's two-wave scoring system.
Since 1990, Slater has been primarily sponsored by Quiksilver and rides Channel Islands surfboards featuring his own signature line of FCS fins.
