Varg Vikernes, born Kristian Vikernes, is a controversial figure in the Norwegian black metal music scene, known for his extremist ideologies. He established the solo project Burzum in 1991, which quickly gained traction and became influential in the burgeoning black metal genre. In 1992, Vikernes joined the band Mayhem, adopting the persona of Count Grishnackh, further solidifying his presence within the community.

His life took a dark turn in 1994 when he was convicted for the murder of his Mayhem bandmate Øystein Aarseth, better known as Euronymous. Additionally, Vikernes was found guilty of committing arson against several historic churches in Norway, leading to a total prison sentence of 21 years. He served nearly 16 years before being released on parole in early 2009.
