Kat Ruston
Kat Ruston is a Vancouver-based artist with a rich cultural background that blends Chinese, Spanish, and Filipino heritage. As an only child, Ruston found solace in the worlds of manga and video games, often feeling out of sync with her peers. However, she excelled in athletics, embracing her identity as a "tomboy" and discovering her passion for movement and expression.
In 2005, Ruston's talent was recognized during a talent search in Las Vegas, where she earned a scholarship to The New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts. Despite this opportunity, she opted to further her education at Vancouver Island University, a choice she later reflected on with a sense of regret. In 2009, she made a transformative decision to move to Vancouver, where she began her career in the film industry as a Lighting Technician. This role provided her with invaluable insights into the intricacies of production, allowing her to appreciate the artistry behind the scenes.
Ruston's time in the Lighting Department deepened her passion for visual storytelling, as she learned to manipulate light and shadow to evoke emotion and atmosphere in film. Her experience has not only enriched her artistic perspective but has also fueled her dedication to her craft, making her a unique voice in the arts community. With each project, Ruston continues to explore the intersection of light and creativity, leaving a lasting impact on both the film and art worlds.
