Anna Newell is a versatile freelance theatre director known for her diverse array of professional and community productions. She has collaborated with numerous Scottish theatre companies and dedicated several years to Dundee Rep, where she served as Associate Director. During her tenure, she directed acclaimed works such as Dracula, The Jungle Book, If the Moon Can Be Believed, and My Mother Said I Never Should, showcasing her talent for bringing classic and contemporary stories to life.

In addition to her directing accomplishments, Newell founded Loadsaweeminsingin, a vibrant women's a cappella group that boasts 40 members. The group celebrated its 10th anniversary in 2004 with a commissioned operetta from Dundee singer-songwriter Michael Marra, funded by the Scottish Arts Council, highlighting her commitment to fostering artistic collaboration.

Beyond her work in Scotland, she has directed productions for renowned venues such as The Royal Court, Holloway Prison, and Theatre on the Square in Memphis, expanding her influence in the international theatre scene. After directing Michael Duke's Revenge for Tinderbox Theatre Company in Belfast, she made the move to Northern Ireland, where she became the Artistic Director of The Centre for Excellence in Creative and Performing Arts at Queen’s University in autumn 2005. This interdisciplinary arts program reflects her dedication to nurturing creative talent and advancing the performing arts.
