Shirley Bassey

Shirley Bassey, a celebrated Welsh vocalist, is renowned for her striking operatic range and her iconic contributions to the James Bond franchise, having performed the unforgettable theme songs for 'Goldfinger' (1964), 'Diamonds Are Forever' (1971), and 'Moonraker' (1979).

Born on Bute Street in Butetown, Cardiff, on January 8, 1937, she was the youngest of six children born to Henry Bassey, a Nigerian immigrant, and Eliza Jane Start, from northern England. Bassey spent her formative years in the nearby neighborhood of Splott.

At just 14, she left Splott Secondary Modern School and began working at the Curran Steels factory. However, her passion for music led her to perform in local pubs and clubs during her free time. In 1953, Bassey took a significant step in her career by signing her first professional contract with impresario Jack Hylton. She made her recording debut in 1956, marking the beginning of a storied career that would see her rise to international fame.

Throughout her illustrious career, Bassey has released numerous albums and singles, receiving accolades for her powerful performances and dramatic stage presence.
