De Vries's career took a significant turn in 1983 when he reported on the infamous kidnapping of Freddy Heineken for the Dutch daily, De Telegraaf. His in-depth investigation not only led to notable public interest but also resulted in two bestselling books that chronicled the case, inspiring multiple film adaptations and solidifying his reputation as a leading voice in investigative journalism.
Tragically, on July 6, 2021, de Vries was shot outside the RTL Boulevard television studio in Amsterdam, an attack that shocked the nation.
