Bill Browder
William Felix Browder, an American-born financier and political activist, holds dual nationality in the United States and the United Kingdom. He is best known as the CEO and co-founder of Hermitage Capital Management, which served as the investment advisor for the Hermitage Fund, once recognized as the largest foreign portfolio investor in Russia. Browder's investment approach revolved around advocating for shareholder rights, often challenging major Russian corporations, including Gazprom, Surgutneftegaz, Unified Energy Systems, and Sidanco.
Browder's commitment to corporate governance and transparency in Russia brought him into conflict with the Kremlin. This culminated in a significant escalation on November 13, 2005, when he was barred from entering Russia, subsequently deported to the UK, and labeled a threat to national security by Russian authorities. His experiences sparked a broader campaign for justice, highlighting issues of corruption and human rights abuses in Russia. Browder has since become a prominent voice advocating for accountability and reform, drawing international attention to the challenges faced by those who confront powerful interests in the region.
