Karel Effa
Karel Effa, born Karel Effenberger on May 23, 1922, in Prague, was a celebrated Czech actor whose career spanned several decades until his passing on June 11, 1993, also in Prague.
During World War II, Effa served as a soldier in the Government Army under the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia, eventually joining Czechoslovak forces aligned with the Western Allies in Italy. After the war, he continued his military service, attaining the rank of sergeant while performing with the Army Art Ensemble led by Vít Nejedlý for two years. His theatrical journey took him through various prestigious venues, including the Theater of Satire, the State Film Theater, and the Music Theater in Karlín, before becoming an integral part of Semafor Theater in 1979.
Effa was particularly renowned for his comedic talent, amassing 71 notable film roles throughout his career. He portrayed memorable characters such as the villainous Pancho Kid in the cult classic *Lemonade Joe*, the black Gustav in *The Stolen Airship*, and the treasure keeper in the children’s film *Proud Princess*. His work extended beyond cinema; he was a key member of the Czechoslovak State Film Ensemble and performed extensively at the Theater in Fidlovačka and the musical theater in Nusle.
In addition to his artistic pursuits, Effa was an avid hiker, often exploring the Brdy region. He also played a pivotal role in the founding of the Department of Friends and Supporters of Slavia in 1964, dedicated to revitalizing the football club Slavia during its challenging period in the Second Football League.
