Jimmy Chin
Jimmy Chin, born on October 12, 1973, is a multifaceted American professional climber, mountaineer, skier, director, and photographer. He has embarked on a wide range of climbing, ski-mountaineering, and exploratory expeditions across diverse landscapes including China, Pakistan, Nepal, Tanzania, Chad, Mali, South Africa, Borneo, India, and Argentina. Notable achievements in his climbing career include ascending and skiing down Mount Everest, making the first ascents of major rock walls and alpine towers in Pakistan's Karakoram Mountains and the Garhwal Himalayas, as well as traversing the Chang Tang Plateau in north-western Tibet on foot.
Chin's remarkable documentation of his adventures has garnered attention in prestigious publications such as National Geographic, The New York Times Magazine, Vanity Fair, and Outside magazine. In recognition of his contributions to photography, he received the National Geographic "Photographer's Photographer Award" in 2019. His first photography book, *There and Back*, which chronicles his mountain career, achieved New York Times Best Seller status in 2021.
Alongside his wife, Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi, Chin co-directs acclaimed films, including *Meru*, which earned multiple awards, such as the Audience Award at the Sundance Film Festival and an Academy Award nomination, and *Free Solo*, which won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, a BAFTA, and seven Primetime Emmys—setting a record for the highest-grossing opening weekend for a documentary.
