Grant Hart
Grant Hart was born on March 18, 1961, in South St. Paul, Minnesota, and died on September 13, 2017, from complications related to liver cancer and hepatitis C. He is best remembered as the drummer and co-songwriter for the influential punk band Hüsker Dü, where his melodic vocal style and broader lyrical range stood in contrast to bandmate Bob Mould’s more abrasive delivery.
Hart’s songwriting for Hüsker Dü brought notable depth to hardcore punk. Tracks like “The Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill” and “Turn on the News” earned critical acclaim, while songs such as “Diane,” which depicted a murder, and “Books About UFOs,” a playful story, showed his wide-ranging thematic interests. “Standing by the Sea” explored teenage alienation, further expanding the emotional and narrative scope of the genre.
After Hüsker Dü disbanded in 1988, Hart released his debut solo album, *Intolerance*, and formed the alternative rock trio Nova Mob, where he transitioned to vocals and guitar. Following Nova Mob’s breakup in 1995, he focused entirely on his solo career. Throughout his life, Hart’s work was praised by critics and peers alike for its melodic nuance and lyrical ambition, securing his place as a key figure in American punk and alternative rock.
