Sergey Makovetskiy
Sergey Vasilevich Makovetsky was born on June 13, 1958, in Darnitsa, a district near Kiev, Ukraine. Initially, he showed great promise in swimming and water polo, aspiring to be part of the Soviet Olympic Team. However, his mother, a single parent, encouraged him to explore the more artistic side of his talents. After being turned down for admission to Kiev Theatrical College, Makovetsky transitioned to a behind-the-scenes role as a set decorator in Kiev before moving to Moscow. In the capital, he faced further setbacks with rejections from various theater schools and acting troupes. Ironically, it was a convincing performance of feigned illness that led to his exemption from military service when Army medical officials deemed him unfit for service. Eventually, he gained admission to the prestigious Shchukin Theatrical School at the Vakhtangov Theatre in Moscow, graduating in 1980, which led to his affiliation with the Vakhtangov Theatre’s troupe. Over the past three decades, Sergei Makovetsky has garnered critical acclaim, a loyal fan base, and numerous awards, including recognition as People’s Artist of Russia. His notable stage performances include a nine-season portrayal of the title character in Molière's "Amphitryon" and Trigorin in Chekhov's "The Seagull." On screen, he is known for his leading role in Dutch director Jos Stelling's "Duska" and for his collaboration with Nikita Mikhalkov in Aleksei Balabanov's 2005 dark comedy "Blind Man's Bluff."
