Stuart J. Russell
Stuart Jonathan Russell, OBE, FRS, born in 1962, is a prominent British computer scientist recognized for his groundbreaking work in artificial intelligence (AI). Currently, he serves as a professor of computer science at the University of California, Berkeley, where he also holds the esteemed Smith-Zadeh Chair in Engineering. From 2008 to 2011, he expanded his academic influence as an adjunct professor of neurological surgery at the University of California, San Francisco.
Russell is the founder and director of the Center for Human-Compatible Artificial Intelligence (CHAI), an initiative aimed at ensuring that AI systems align with human values. He also established the International Association for Safe and Ethical Artificial Intelligence (IASEAI), underscoring his commitment to ethical practices in AI development.
In collaboration with Peter Norvig, Russell co-authored the seminal textbook "Artificial Intelligence: A Modern Approach," which has become the definitive resource in the field, utilized by over 1,500 universities across 135 countries. His contributions to AI research and education have made a significant impact on the discipline, earning him recognition as a leader in the quest for responsible and beneficial AI technologies.
